offers tips and ideas on
Press Release Submission
Press Release Submission can be
frustrating as you can receive rejections easily and the
average website owner must learn how to change his/her
thinking from sales or selling into the needed news
necessary for a quality press release submission.
1. Creating a story for your Press
Release Submission
The hardest part of this is your approach to
it. It is common for business owners to want to sell
their service, product or promote their website but that is
not what makes news and does not sell newspapers and is not
announced on the news. The wrong press releases are
rejected.
You need to learn how to think like a news
reporter and not a business owner. This is hard for
the average person but it can be overcome. As a
general rule, you should
be happy if your business is only just mentioned in the news.
In order to accomplish finding a story,
spend some time reading the stories in newspapers, visiting
news reporting websites and even watching news on television
viewing them from the prospective of how you or your
business could fit into each story.
There are two things that can ensure your
press release submission is accepted.
(1) The story
(2) Proper presentation & format of
the story
Spend a lot of time on finding the right
story for you or your business. Can't find one?
How about creating one? Become an idea person thinking
like a reporter. Remember, to be newsworthy, the story
should be something the general public wants to know.
I, too, have had the hurdle of finding what
I call is the right 'hook' for the business. The
public in general thirsts for information that benefits them
with some form of sensationalism thrown in.
In your research watch the current headlines
on the news and who or what is currently newsworthy.
Can you create a situation where your business intertwines
with any of the current 'hot' topics? Examples are:
the Obama family (of course), Sarah Palin, the insurance
bill being voted on, the Pakistan war, Google's new
competitive phone system with Apple, and on and on.
I'm sure you can find something but it is not necessarily
easy to do, so work at it.
Now write out the story you have decided to
create. It could even be the creation of giving a free
vacation away to the 100th customer of your company but to
be acceptable it needs to be presented correctly!
If you cannot find a story, you can always
create a newsworthy event that you put into action to create
a sensational news event. Be creative and brainstorm
your ideas, then after you have a list, logically scrutinize
to remove the ones that will not work.
You story should cover who, what, when,
where, why and how.
2. Writing your press release for your
press release submission
Now you need to present your story in an
acceptable way to ensure that it is accepted by the media
and not just thrown in the trash. Many are rejected.
Create your headline first approximately
only 36 to 40 characters, including spaces, in length and similar to the many
headlines you have read by this time. Some News
Press Release Submission companies will accept up to 100
characters. You must read what the rules are when you
submit EACH press release to ensure you conform to their
proper guidelines.
Your headline should be a summary statement
that covers the exact content of your story. Avoid any
self-serving headline as this is news and not sales.
Remember this though your work. It helps to pretend in
your mind you are talking about someone else or someone
else's business and you are just the reading of the press
release. A lot of writers state
your headline is most important because if it doesn't
capture the readers interest immediately it is either not
newsworthy, a poor title or a poor press release. The
chances are high that if the title doesn't grab the reader,
the press release is scrapped and never even read.
Your first sentence of your press release is
the most important within the text body. It should
continue the information of your headline.
The main paragraph must cover 'who cares'
and the main facts that is the basis of the press release
including 'who', 'what', 'when', 'where' and 'why'.

Internet Marketing Services
offers suggested instructions on
PRESS RELEASE SUBMISSION
This is our personal instructions that we
use for our own use and we share this in hopes of helping
you more than the information you have found on the internet
by now:
BEGINNING: (Must be done on company letterhead)
PRESS RELEASE (caps, bolded and centered)
For Immediate Release:
<State> (Press Release), <Date>
Your first paragraph of the press release should be written in
a clear and concise manner. The opening sentence contains
the most important information; keep it to 25 words or less.
Never take for granted the reader has read your headline. It
needs to contain information that will "entice" the reader.
Remember, your story must be newsworthy and factual; don't
make it a sales pitch or it will end up in the trash. Write
for the Media.
1. Use your keyword selection for optimization.
2. Choose the most important keyword selection for title (Create an
interesting 'hook') (The more Newsworthy, the more reporters
will report it.)
3. Use H1 for header tag (title) (needs to be short &
grab attention) (hook)Headline should be kept to 80
characters (hopefully) but no more than 125 maximum.
Capitalize every word with the exception of 'a', 'the', 'an'
or any word that is three characters or less. (centered,
bold and capitalized) (Exclude the words 'a', 'the' as well
as forms of the verb 'to be' within title.
Can add a subhead to title (add keyword selection or
keyword selection phrase
within)
4. Add the rest of the keyword selection strategically within the
press release
5. Add keyword selection in backlinks back to upir
website. (Read
instructions as this is not always acceptable.)
6. Make sure density levels (for keyword selection) are
appropriate (recommend 8-15% overall density)
7. Make sure you optimize the first 250 words of content
8. Substitute keyword selection phrases for pronouns like "it" or
"its" to increase their overall frequency in the release.
9. Never use 'I', 'we' and 'you' outside of a direct
quotation. Definitely it is an advertisement then and not a
press release.
Recommend choosing a keyword selection phrase which is shown 3
times within press release and bolded.
A hook is something sensational, directly benefiting the
public (Sample: Title: NEW WAY DISCOVERED TO RECYCLE CANS
Or a subhead can be placed further down within the body
to show more information.
Definition of a good press release is pseudo-news story,
written in third person (from reporter's viewpoint), that
seeks to demonstrate to the reader the NEWSWORTHINESS of a
story, especially for the particular person, event, service
or product.
Press release should answer the questions of 'who',
'what', 'when', 'where', 'why', and 'how'. Keep your
sentences and paragraphs short; a paragraph should be no
more than 3-4 sentences. Your press release should be between 500
to 800 words, written in a word processing program and spell
checked for errors. The mood of the press release should be
factual, don't use a sales pitch as it will ruin your
credibility with the reader.

### (centered and indicates the end of the press release)
Note: Press Releases should be placed on the website.
THE BODY OF THE PRESS RELEASE:
This begins with the date and city & state for which the
press release is originated. The body of the press release
is very basic; who, what, where, when, why and how. The
first paragraph of the press release should contain in brief
detail what the press release is about. The second paragraph
explains, in detail: who cares; why you should care; where
one can find it; when it will happen. Also, included in the
second 'informative' paragraph is generally a quote that
gives the press release a personal touch. Touchy-feelies go a long
way with journalists. Press releases and news stories are
boring to journalists without a 'human interest'. The third
and generally final paragraph is a summation of the press release
and further information on your company with the company
contact information clearly spelled out.
The content of the press release, beginning with the date
and city of origin, should be typed in a clear, basic font
(Times New Roman, Arial, etc.) and double spaced. If your
press release exceeds one page, the second page should
indicate 'Page Two' in the upper right hand corner.
Journalistic standards have set basic parameters to define
the end of a press release: ###.
